Documenting your outdoor explorations with a notebook and pencil is an incredibly powerful tool that opens the door to nature observation, scientific inquiry, curiosity, and appreciation at a much greater level than passive watching. Learn how to observe, ask questions, and incorporate creativity in your own nature notebook in this interactive workshop taught by naturalist and illustrator Jack Hobe. Anyone can learn to nature journal- this program is suitable for all ages and skill levels!

Program Outline:
o Lecture (30 min)
• Nature Journaling Basics: I Notice (observation), I Wonder (questions), It Reminds Me Of (making connections)- participants will practice these techniques using nature objects
• Tips for incorporating drawing, writing and quantification (measuring, counting, etc.)
o Outdoor sketching opportunity (30-45 min)- Participants will find natural phenomena to sketch and document using techniques learned in the lecture
o Q&A and wrap-up (5-10 min)
Event Information:
Program duration is 1 ½ hours. Required materials: Sketchbook or paper, pencil, colored pencils/watercolor (if desired). Basic sketching materials will be provided unless attendees would prefer to bring their own supplies.
Workshop Fee: $250 (not including travel expenses). Discounted rate for nonprofit organizations and churches. This workshop is designed to be presented in either an indoor classroom or outdoor setting suitable for the presentation. Please note that travel expenses may be included in the final instructor fee.
I will correspond with your organization’s event coordinator via email to finalize program details. Upon scheduling of the workshop, you will receive a Square invoice payable via credit card. A non-refundable 50% deposit is due upon scheduling, remaining balance is due three days before the event. Only weather-related cancellations will be fully refunded or rescheduled.
